Neill Harvey-Smith Feature - Educating Roma children There are around half a million Roma in Serbia. Just one in 50 Roma children attends pre-school. Over 60% of Roma children do not complete primary school. OSI Belgrade is trying to do something about it. As part of the Decade of Roma inclusion 2005-2015, they are working to ensure that Roma children have the opportunity to learn. Further information on Roma Initiatives. News - Estonian expansion The Estonian Debating Society is on the march. They have trained 10 Karl Popper debate teachers in Finland, with another 20 more to come. They have published a KP handbook and produced a professionally sampled debate video, both in Finnish. Announcement - World Online Debating League What’s that you say? You love the World Online Debating Championships so much you want the chance to debate competitively all year round? Well now, dear friends, you can. Debatewise is about to launch the World Online Debating League (with a more mouth-friendly WODL acronym) and you are formally invited to take part. They are looking for just 50 teams from universities around the world to be founding members of the league. You’ll be able to pick who you debate against, what you debate and even when you debate it. The judges will be hand-picked from amongst the world’s finest. At the end of the academic year, the winner will get a fantastic prize and the honour of being a world champion. The entrance fee will be a measly $40, though free to any WODC participant - and bursaries are available. Interested? Mail wodl@debatewise.org Announcement - European Open Do you want to debate in Germany? The EurOpen 2010 will take place on 6-13 November 2010 in Stuttgart. The tournament is in World Schools Format and boasts a team cap of 40 with a maximum of 3 teams per nation, so it will be a truly international competition. Convened by Debating Society Germany e.V. David Whitehead and Christopher Sanchez, the participation fee is 130 EUR per person, regardless of homestay or hostel, plus a 35 EUR surcharge for those staying on the night of October 12th, after the final. The deadline for homestays is September 15th - so be quick! - and the deadline for hostel is October 1st. The draw will be published on October 2nd and there are 7 preliminary rounds, of which five are prepared: 1) THW give foreigners domiciled in a country the right to vote in that country’s general elections 2) THW scrap the euro 3) THW repatriate cultural artefacts 4) THW abolish aid to Third World countries 5) THW support measures to allow oil drilling in ecologically sensitive areas. All final rounds are impromptus. Registration and more info here: www.europen2010.com Announcement - Global Debates Join the international community of debaters and discuss issues related to international migration – the topic for the Autumn Campaign – beginning October 1st 2010: Nations of the world should increase protection of the economic and social rights of migrants. The Global Debates are a year-long initiative, developed to give high school students and their teachers an opportunity to initiate public discussion around critical international issues. It is a platform to exchange views and share courses of action that needs to be taken around the world to address these issues. Any high school in the world (grades 9-12, ages 14-19) can participate in the Global Debates. In the past 3 years we had schools in more than 90 countries participate in the Global Debates. It will take place from July 19 to August 1, 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey. The theme of the 2011 IDEA Youth Forum is international migration. The Pink Crew were awarded with the Winner’s Cup and the top three speakers were Sherali Alisherov, Aleksey Puzarin and Gizar Gaynutdinov. Results - Heart of Europe To round off the summer, debaters, judges and coaches from over 20 countries descended on the beautiful city of Olomouc in the Czech Republic. It was the 7th Heart of Europe (HoE) debating tournament. In the final - on the motion that Israel should be obliged (if necessary by force) to withdraw from all lands acquired since 1966 - South Africa beat Hong Kong. Results - World Online Debating Championships Greece, New Zealand, Canada and either Mongolia or the Czech Republic are the semi-finalists in the 2010 World Online Debating Championships. The beaten quarter-finalists so far are Macedonia, Botswana and India. Scrutiny increases in the semis with 4 judges per debate and a place in the final to play for. International Debate Education Association – in cooperation with the Open Society Institute (At Home in Europe Program: http://www/soros.org/initiatives/home and Youth Initiative Program) is organizing a 2-day conference (19th-20th November 2010) in Rotterdam aiming at sharing of experiences and ideas about successful methodologies, programs and projects aimed at inclusion of marginalized, migrant and minority youth. Objectives of the Conference
Participants The conference is opened to educators (teachers, academics, etc.), youth and social workers, representatives of non-governmental organizations and community- based organizations and groups, youth organizations and youth leaders, representatives of local governments (particularly from departments addressing the problems of youth). The Conference is opened to participants from the EU - we have already confirmation from participants from the following countries: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuania, UK, the Netherlands. TRANSILVANIA RULZ!
PRIMII LA DEZBATERI ACADEMICE
Delegaţia din Transilvania a avut un incredibil sentiment de deja vu la aceste Campionate Naţionale de Dezbateri Academice în format World Schools, organizate la Ploieşti. În mod absolut paradoxal, în finala naţională s-a ajuns să se reediteze finala de la Regionala TransDebate de la Sfântu Gheorghe de acum 10 zile. Într-o formă de zile mari şi cu un extraordinar simţ al măsurii, al consecvenţei şi al coerenţei, echipa Ioan Naşcu, Alexandra Zlătior şi Alexandra Petean a adus titlul din nou în Ardeal, după o pauză de doar un an – Banatul a câştigat anul trecut titlul la Naţionala de la Sfântu Gheorghe. Deşi îi învinseseră pe actualii campioni la regională, exploziva echipă Ioana Stupariu, Călin Mureşanu, Dani Cruceriu a trebuit să se recunoască învinsă în ultimul act, fără ca asta să ne facă să uităm traseul lor impresionant de până atunci, meciurile dominate categoric, dar mai ales victoria superbă, deşi la limită, din semifinalele cu Muntenia, în cel considerat cel mai puternic meci al turneului. Adăugând medaliile de argint şi bronz la vorbitori, prin aceeaşi Ioan Naşcu şi Alexandra Zlătior, Transilvania şi-a împlinit cu vârf şi îndesat obiectivele la acest turneu naţional. De amintit că titlul de cel mai bun vorbitor a fost câştigat de Dragoş Ghiţă, un debater excelent, reprezentant al gazdelor din Ploieşti, participant la Campionatul Mondial din acest an în format World Schools. Şi dacă am amintit de participări internaţionale,este momentul să vă împărtăşesc cel mai important „secret al succesului” al celor două echipe din Transilvania: participarea constantă a componenţilor lor la turneele de top din Europa, uneori cu rezultate notabile, alteori nu, dar beneficiind de experienţe fenomenale, cu care este din ce în ce mai greu să concureze opozanţii lor.
Sentimentul de deja vu a avut şi alte aspecte pentru delegaţia Transilvaniei. Experienţa superioară şi tactul actualilor campioni ai României i-au ajutat pe aceştia să treacă în eliminatorii, la fel ca şi la regională, de echipa integralistă din Sfântu Gheorghe, Antonia Mari, Vlad Vidican, Ioana Cocoveică, extrem de talentaţi şi de convingători, dar vizibil incomodaţi de schimbarea noului format de dezbateri, care nu mai permite timp de gândire, nu mai impune unitate în conţinut şi acordă un plus mare stilului şi strategiei. La fel de incomodaţi de schimbare şi cu un plus de ghinion la tragerile la sorţi din prima fază a competiţiei, celelalte două reprezentate ale Transilvaniei - Adrian Mălăieş, Daiana Popa, Adrian Pascovici şi Denisa Neamţiu, Mihai Pop, Laura Ardeleanu, ultima componentă „beneficiind” şi de o răceală extrem de puternică, au reuşit două, respectiv o victorie, motiv pentru care nu au treacut în eliminatorii.
Mândru că am putut conduce o delegaţie a Transilvaniei care a făcut istorie – niciodată o regiune nu a reuşit să facă din finala unei Campionatului Naţional de Debate o „afacere internă” - îi felicit pe toţi reprezentanţii ardeleni prezenţi la Ploieşti, dar şi pe îndrumătorii lor, în mod deosebit pe Emil Mesaroş, Dan Cristea, Grigore Pop şi Radu Cotarcea, fără care toate aceste performanţe nu ar fi putut fi decât vise.
În încheiere, nu pot să nu remarc şi să felicit în mod deosebit organizarea exemplară a competiţiei de către colegii din Ploieşti, echipa condusă de Sabin Ciornea meritând din plin o reverenţă adâncă. BRAVO!

REGIONALA "TRANS-DEBATE 2010" LA FINAL
Regională cu obiective atinse. Succes la Naţională!
La sfârşitul săptămânii trecute s-a desfăşurat la Sfântu Gheorghe Forumul Regional de Dezbateri Academice „TransDebate 2010”, în organizarea Debate Club Sfântu Gheorghe şi ARDOR Transilvania, cu sprijinul Colegiului Naţional Mihai Viteazul, al Bibliotecii Judeţene Bod Peter şi al Centrului pentru Cultură Arcuş.
Primele două zile a avut loc un curs de debate instructiv în format „world schools”, susţinut de invitatul de onoare al evenimentului, Derek Lande, fost campion mondial şi actualmente arbitru de top în lumea dezbaterilor academice.
Au fost 24 de meciuri de confruntări de idei, 3 runde de calificări, semifinale la Castelul de la Arcuş şi finala în amfiteatrul Colegiului, în care cele două moţiuni propuse, referitoare la interzicerea importurilor de bunuri produse de copii şi de reformare a sistemului de reprezentare al naţiunilor la ONU. La final a câştigat o echipă din Cluj, Ioana Stupariu, Andrei Melinte, Călin Mureşanu, ultimul desemnat şi cel mai bun vorbitor al competiţiei, într-o finală tot cu o echipă din Cluj, Alexandra Zlătior, Ioan Naşcu, ‚Ştefan Strilciuc.
